Choosing a God-Parent

In recent weeks I have seen an abundance of Facebook friends having babies and I am so overjoyed for them.  I have been praying for each one and for all the friends who are expecting.  One of the most important decisions that I think a parent could make for their child.  The god parent is a child's guide in everything Catholic.  They are a prayer warrior and a friend for their child.  They can act as a spiritual director and mentor in the faith.  They are a role model for how to live out the faith. When choosing godparents parents should consider some of the following:
1. Is the person trustworthy and loyal?
2. Is the person in communion with the Catholic Church? (Attends church regularly, believes in the true teachings of the church.)
3. Will the person be around to support the child spiritually?
4. Has the person made good moral choices in his or her life?

These are just a few of the things to consider when choosing a godparent.  In the end the parent needs to prayerfully consider this decision and do what is best for the child. Don't just choose a friend or relative cause its the right thing to do.  Really consider the relationship that your child will have with this person in the years to come.

Good luck!
